How it works
How the day count is calculated
The calculator takes the difference between the two dates at noon local time, so daylight-saving changes and time zones never shift the count by a day. If the first date is in the past, you get “days since.” If it is in the future, you get “days until.” Weeks are whole weeks plus leftover days, months use the average month length of 30.44 days, and years use 365.25 days to account for leap years.
The next-milestone line looks ahead to round numbers people actually celebrate: 7, 30, 50, 100, 200, 365, 500, 1,000 and beyond. Knowing the exact date of day 100 in advance turns a vague count into something you can put on a calendar.
Day one or day zero? This tool counts the starting date as day zero, so the day after you began is day 1. If you prefer to call the start “day 1,” add one to the result. Pick a convention and stick with it.
Why a running day count changes behavior
A count that only grows is a small commitment device. Every day you keep it, the number gets a little more valuable and the idea of resetting it a little less attractive. That is why sobriety counters, no-smoking timers, and running streaks work for so many people: the number does the motivating, not willpower.
It also gives you honest feedback about a decision. “I have been going to the gym for 47 days” is harder to argue with than “I have been going for a while.” When the count passes 66, roughly the average time it takes a new behavior to feel automatic, you have evidence that the routine is real. Our habit formation calculator maps that research onto your calendar.
Ways people use a days-since counter
- Quitting something: days since the last cigarette, drink, or late-night scroll. The habit streak calculator adds milestone dates at a weekly cadence.
- Starting something: days since the first run, first language lesson, first day writing.
- Life events: days since a move, a diagnosis, a new job, or a baby was born.
- Countdowns: days until a race, an exam, a trip, or a savings deadline. The goal pace calculator turns days left into a daily target.
Turn the count into a card
A number alone can feel abstract. A card with visible punches gives each week a shape. For long counts, make each punch worth a week or a month so the card fills at a satisfying pace. For a fresh streak, use a daily card and let the first fully punched row be the first small win.
Keep it on your home screen
Punchcard turns the result into a card of punches with reminders and a widget, so progress is one tap away.

How do I calculate days since a date?
Subtract the earlier date from the later one. Counting at noon on both days avoids off-by-one errors from daylight saving time. This calculator does that automatically and also shows weeks, months, hours, and your next milestone.
Does the calculator count the start date as day 1?
No. The start date is day 0 and the following day is day 1, which matches how most streak apps count. If you prefer the start date to be day 1, add one to the result.
Can I count days until a future date?
Yes. Enter a future date in the first field and today in the second, and the result switches to “days until.” It works for countdowns to races, exams, trips, and deadlines.
How many days is 6 months?
About 182 or 183 days, depending on which months are included. The calculator uses an average month of 30.44 days for its months figure and shows the exact day count separately.
Is my data stored?
No. Everything is calculated in your browser and nothing is sent to a server or saved.
How can I keep a running count on my phone?
Create a card in Punchcard for the thing you are counting and punch it daily or weekly. The widget keeps the count visible on your home screen without opening an app.
